Description

The Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) offers a one-year, fully accredited fellowship in hematology/hematopathology. Training includes laboratory hematology, interpretation of tissue biopsies performed for hemato-lymphoid disorders and experimental hematology. The first year of fellowship training includes core rotations in the clinical hematology laboratories at University Hospital, San Antonio and the flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics and cytogenetics laboratories in the South Texas Reference Laboratories at UTHSCSA. Clinical training includes interpretation of peripheral blood films, body fluid preparations, bone marrow aspirates and biopsies, lymph node diagnosis, work-up of patients with coagulation disorders, flow cytometry immunophenotyping, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The fellow actively participates in teaching medical students and residents, and makes a presentation to the San Antonio Society of Pathologists.  The fellow is jointly supervised by the faculty in hematopathology. There is also an opportunity for an optional, separate, non-accredited second year of fellowship. Upon completion of the accredited Hematopathology fellowship at UTHSCSA, the potential second year of fellowship training is principally dedicated to research in hematopathology and available based on mutual interest between the fellow candidate and Department of Pathology

Board eligibility or certification in anatomic and clinical pathology.
